Are you dreaming of a visit to Italy – but without the crazy summer crowds? (I’m sure you’ve seen the videos of people shoulder to shoulder trying to enjoy Florence or Cinque Terre) – But when you combine a June trip to Italy, when crowds are slightly lower than prime summer with some off the beaten path destinations, you get the best of both worlds – warm weather, fewer tourists and local festivals that will give you a chance to see the vibrance of Italian Culture.
Picture Perfect Weather: Days won’t be too hot, nights will be cool but nothing a sweater can’t fix while dining al fresco! Loads of sunshine without the scorching heat of July and August (which, if that’s your thing – we have a beach town or two for you!)
Fewer crowds: Some people are starting to say “Italy doesn’t have an ‘Off Season’ anymore.” and they’re not wrong! BUT the good news is there are some times that are better than others. And if you don’t want to pack a winter jacket, then late-May/early-June may be just the time for you. You’ll be comfortable outside for extended periods sitting overlooking vineyards, taking a hike in the lakeside towns or even sitting overlooking the sea for a spectacular sunset. June is the time to visit the iconic sights with fewer crowds and shorter lines.
Vibrant festivals: In early June, Italy celebrates Republic Day – a national holiday that often includes parades, great food, and amazing wine. In June, you’ll also experience the enchanting Corpus Domini processions in major cities where there’s always a lively celebration happening often inclusive of floral parades.
Explore charming villages: while it may be most convenient to stay in Florence, it gives so many opportunities to take day trips and discover other hidden gems. Cinque Terre is always a favorite for the views, the food, and the joy of traveling among the 5 coastal towns via ferry or train – or better yet, both! You could also spend a day visiting one or more hilltop vineyards of Tuscany and tasting their wines – fancy a Chianti while tasting aged parmesan topped with local honey? We can make that happen!
Immerse yourself in culture: You can visit many historic sites and use our tips for avoiding crowds, attend art exhibitions, or enjoy a performance at an outdoor theater. You can also enjoy the individual culture of each town through their festivals which are very common during the month of June.
Indulge in ALL of the food and wine: Each region in Italy is known for various cuisine and beverages. Why not visit a few regions and sample local delicacies, visit local vineyards and hear about the history from a member of the family who has cared for the vines for hundreds of years, and take a class at a local home and learn about Italy’s rich culinary heritage. You can also stop at one of the famed markets like Campo de Fiori to experience some of the freshest produce!
Relax on the beach: Ok ok, for those that love to sun worship or just relax and catch some zzzz’s under a beach umbrella, we can make that happen too! We can help you find a resort, bed and breakfast or other beachside accommodations to escape the crowds and unwind on the beautiful beaches of Puglia or the Amalfi Coast.
Book early: While June isn’t peak season, popular destinations and accommodations fill up quickly and we suggest booking 11+ months in advance, if you can
Pack light: Opt for comfortable, breathable clothing suitable for warm weather. Bring a sweater and rain coat, just in case.
Embrace spontaneity: While planning is essential, we will always leave room for unexpected adventures and discoveries. We’ll even give you a few suggestions like “If you find yourself with free time in Sorrento – you can take in some limoncello while overlooking the sea and having a nice lunch at one of our favorite restaurants!”
