Passport Renewal Timeline

US Passport Timelines

It's often the first question we ask new clients: What is your current passport status? This is for a few reasons.

  • Many countries require that you have at least 6 months of validity on your passport from the date you're schedule to return to the US. So if you're traveling June 15-June 30th, depending on the countries you'd be visiting - you may be required to have a passport good through at least December 31st! (And it's good to have some time padding in there)
  • The current passport renewal processing times right now are CRAZY!
    • Standard Processing: 10-13 weeks
    • Expedited Processing: 7-9 weeks
    • Then you have to add on 2 weeks for the application to get there and two weeks for your passport to be returned. So nearly 6 months for a standard processing passport!

What can you do about it?

  • PLAN AHEAD! Don't wait until you want to take the vacation. Get ahead of it. Go into your safe and check your passport expiry now.
  • Have someone you trust double check your application. We've had clients with typos - and that can take extra time to correct that you weren't accounting for.
  • Expedite if it is affordable for you.
  • Plan travel further out (think 9+ months). This is a departure from the trends we're seeing right now where people are booking int he 6 month range. But you'll save yourself the stress -that's for sure!
