Taking a Family Cruise

Cruising is a great way to travel with children - giving parents the opportunity to mix fun and excitement with a little rest and relaxation. There are activities for all ages, and the ship is like a floating resort. Here are some tips for making your cruise vacation with kids a success:

  • Choose the right cruise line. Some cruise lines are better suited for families than others. Look for a line that has a variety of activities for kids, such as a kids' club, water slides, and game rooms. Some ships are better for younger kids, some are better for teens, and some offer a great mix for both! So do make sure to research (or work with a Travel Agent like us - who are cruise match makers!)

For younger children, we often recommend Royal Caribbean for the award winning kids club, the super packed activity decks, the kid-friendly entertainment and more!

  • Book a family-friendly cabin. Many cruise lines offer cabins that are designed for families. These cabins often have multiple beds, a pull-out sofa, and a private balcony. If you're traveling with young children who nap - a balcony is critical!

  • Plan your activities. There are so many things to do on a cruise, it can be hard to know where to start. Here are a few ideas:
    • Visit the kids' club day one to sign up. Most cruise lines have a kids' club that is staffed by trained professionals. The kids can participate in a variety of activities, such as arts and crafts, games, and sports. If your children are under 3 years old - there are only certain ships that allow drop off services for this age group.

    • Go swimming or visit the splash pads. Most cruise ships have multiple pools, hot tubs, and water slides. Do note there are few ships that allow swim diapers.

    • Explore the ship. There are many things to see and do on a cruise ship, such as the casino, the theater, and the shops. Often, other cruise passengers hide rubber ducks - so if you see some, collect them!
    • Take a shore excursion. There are many different shore excursions available, such as snorkeling, hiking, and sightseeing.
  • Pack for all weather conditions. The weather can change quickly at sea, so it is important to pack for all types of weather. Be sure to pack sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, rain gear, and a swimsuit.
  • Be flexible. Things don't always go according to plan when you are traveling with kids. Be prepared to be flexible and go with the flow.

Cruising can be a great way to create lasting memories with your children. By following these tips, you can ensure that your cruise vacation is a success.
